On February 1, 1960 in Greensboro, North Carolina, four North Carolina A&T State University first-year students walked downtown and “sat-in” at the whites-only lunch counter at Woolworth’s. They refused to leave when denied service, and stayed until the store closed. The next day 25 other students joined them and, by the third week, demonstrations had spread to at least 250 cities. These protests contributed to the launching of the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) in April at Shaw University and, by the end of that July, Woolworth’s was desegregated.
